Veltra Bindery

A one-bench bindery: hand-sewn books, cloth cases and quiet paper repair.

Choosing thread for a sewn textblock

Unbleached linen thread, 18/3 for ordinary octavo sections and 25/3 when the paper is thick and the spine needs swell. Wax it lightly: too much wax and the knots slip, too little and the thread frays before the last signature is through.

Why a case needs grain direction

Board, cloth and endpaper all move with humidity, and they must move the same way — grain running head to tail. Get it wrong and the finished cover warps within a week of leaving the press, no matter how carefully it was pasted.

Repairing a torn leaf

Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste, feathered along the tear so the mend fades into the sheet. Dry under blotter and a light weight; the page should still turn without a crackle.

The press does the patience for you

Most failures are hurry. An hour in the standing press after casing-in, and overnight under boards, does more for a book than any clever technique.
